Frequently Asked Questions

Who Owns Alfa Romeo?

Alfa Romeo is a company that originated in Italy. Nicola Romeo, a Neapolitan entrepreneur, purchased Società Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (ALFA) in 1915. He changed the mission of the company to building military hardware to assist the Allied and Italian war effort.

Romeo changed the company name to Alfa Romeo and produced the Torpedo 20-30 HP in 1920. Romeo retained ownership of the company until this same year. At this point, the company started building small cars and moved away from designing and producing luxury vehicles.

By 1954, Alfa Romeo had begun producing the Alfa Romeo Twin Cam engine, which they used until 1994. Alfa Romeo produced a few sports cars in the 60s and 70s, but was struggling, so the company's ownership was transferred to the FIAT Group in 1986.

FIAT Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is the eighth-largest automaker in the world, created when FIAT and Chrysler merged in 2014. FCA owns Chrysler, Dodge, Alfa Romeo, Abarth, FIAT, Jeep, Maserati, RAM Trucks, and Lancia.

Where Is Alfa Romeo From?

The company that eventually became Alfa Romeo started in 1906. The original owner was the French automobile company of Alexandre Darracq, along with a few Italian investors. Initially, the company was located in Naples. The first factory was built in Portello, Italy between 1906 and 1909.

Until the first world war, Società Anonima Italiana Darracq (SAID) and ALFA (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) were involved in motor racing. They built the GP1914 with a 4-cylinder engine in 1914. After the start of WWI, the company stopped producing automobiles for three years.
